I just recently got a position of Network Administrator at a new company. Before I start any types of modification to their current system I was wondering of any type of inexpensive auditing software that would help me evaluate their current network. Also they are using NT and was wondering how I can set up profiles to monitor the network traffic (peak times, user usage, etc.) Anyone have some good ideas? I want to see where they stand now, before I do anything and then see how my modifications help. Thank for any help.

How technical do you want to get?

NT has a set of network monitoring tools, which you can intstall from the CD using the services tab from the network properties. They are not installed by default.

This will give you tons of information on the TCP/IP performance (although Heisenberg's principal applies to this - monitoring the network will affect performance of the network).

You also get some baseline info from the task manager (right click tool bar) , and you can set various monitors.

Some of it is quite difficult to interpret if you're not well versed in TCP/IP, but you can always ask here . . .

Good luck with the new job!
