We have a Netware 5.1 server, Win 98 PCs, Client32 ver 3.1.0.0 sp1. We sometimes get an error when saving a Word 97 document to a Network drive. The error window reads: There has been a network or file permission error. The network connection may be lost. The users click OK, retry the save, and it saves the document. I thought it might be a NetShield problem, but it happens when I have NetShield turned off. Any suggestions?

This was a problem with the Filesystem after SP1 was released. I found that applying NW51SP2a the problems disappeared. If you apply this you should also upgrade all the clients to the latest versions as well.

see novell tech doc 10054917 for possible
solutions. we have seen this in our shop, but not as
much since applying sp2a (novell sbs 5.1). seems
more related to using compression on the volumes?

i have the same problem On Netware 5.0 Sp 6a. I set Client File Caching Enabled to "off" and my Office save problems went away. BUt now i have a problem with users running a Dbase program. I can't seem to find a happy medium. Any ideas????????

Our company has the same problem but I would like to outline the fact that this is a problem that happens mostly in WORD 97 and is an acknowledged problem from Microsoft.
You can look for some tips on their support site with the query words wd97 file permission error.

In our case there seems to be a problem with the length of the document name if this one is longer than eight characters which would explain why this happens with some files and not with others.

Turning off UNC mapping in the registry, not allowing a backup of word files before saving should be considered as well.

P.S. We use Office 97 with SR2, Novell Netware Client 4.80.

Installed Mcafee Netshield 4.50 on Novell 4.11 sp9 server. The server abends every sunday morning at about 2:00am. Mcafee runs without error the other 6 days of the week. The error message in the abend log indicates a problem is with Netshield.

"Page Fault Processor Exception (Error code 00000000).
Running Process: NETSHLD SCScan001 Process."

"The CPU encountered a problem executing code in METHNW.NLM. The problem may be in that module or in data passed to that module by a process owned by NETSHLD.NLM."

I have deleted Netshield and the objects from the server and tree, reinstalled Netshield, recreated the objects and still the problem exists.

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Sounds like there is a background process that is causing this error. Check to see if you have any kind of clean-up process or something similar, configured in McAfee to layunch at that time.

Good Luck.
