I have tried opening the mail file on the server and get the same response.
There might be something wrong with the network connection between the client and the server. Please check the settings of the network-card - I assume that they are not correct so the client gets a timeout before it can complete the request with the server.

Have you physically gone to the machine and tried to open it locally? If so and it fails, then for some reason, the initial view of the mail file cannot get built. That could be for a host of reasons. A couple might be that the file is absolutely enormous and it is taking a long time to rebuild the view index, the file is corrupt, or the disk has a problem.
