Ok, So I'm NOT so bright after all.I bought a linksys BEFSR4 Cable DSL 4-Port Router.I figured set-up would be a snap, and it was (as long as you don't mind having no internet connection)!
Running XP Pro/Win ME on a dual boot set up
Verizon DSL w/Netgear NIC and Westell Modem(white one)
Dynamic IP is provided BY ISP.

My trouble starts two fold. When I hook it up and run XP's Network wizard, the first thing it does is try and make the connection to the internet, which fails/times out on "dial-up".Its like I unplugged the line.Same happens if I manually set the router up.I enabled DHCP and PPPOE and inserted the login name and pass required for the connection(per instruction book).Enabled or off makes no difference. It also refers to Win 95 and 98 only, consult the NT manual for NT(which I don't have)to adjust settings.
Things I noticed:
All the lights SEEM correctly lit on the router.
IP's in the correct range SEEM to get issued, and MAC addresses and subnets are there but no DNS number or default gateway.
Manual mentions "if your ISP uses PPPOE then ENABLE this on the router but DISABLE this elsewhere on the PC"-HUH??

I realize this is hard to solve via a message board but has anyone tried a XP/Verizon DSL network on this router?
Any ideas where a newbie would go awry generally speaking?
Do I need info from Verizon I.E. network addresses? They will NOT discuss the issue but if I can confuse tier 1 techs w/ a address question they MAY pass me on to tier 2!!

Thanks for any help anyone may have.

Whew!

Ok, I use a cable modem and not DSL (half the time I'm thankful, half the time I'm disgusted) - so I don't have to deal with PPPOE (at leaast not yet!).

However, on your side of the router there IS NO PPPOE!

This is between the router and the DSL modem.

You only use PPPOE if you connect directly to the DSL line (no router).

You simply tell XP that you are connected to a LAN, to use DHCP to get addresses, and that you use the LAN to get to the Internet.

What little "tricky" stuff there is will be in the router configuration, and even that ought to be pretty "cookbook" out of the router manual (yeah, right).

This is why they are (trying to) tell you not to use PPPOE on the computer but to use it on the router instead.

Right you are(as I later learned).
You have to let the router handle all the pppoe stuff.

dont use the network setup wizard!

set the username and password given to you by verizon in the routers web site configuration (192.168.1.1)
and set your windows xp clients manually by going to start>control panel > network connections and right-click on the network connection and click properties. then go into tcp/ip properties and set it to automatically get the IP address and DNS server

Also, make sure DHCP is set on the router!

I use this configuration with my verizon dsl and linksys 4 port router
