Hello,

How can I perform monitoring on a router? For example, how can I monitor a specific workstation with it's I.P address or hostname with information on what type of traffic it's traversing inbound and outbound to and from the internet? For eg, I would like to monitor data transmissions, the source of the transmission (ie youtube video downloading, ebay browsing), etc etc
Also, Is there any tools which can be used to monitor traffic on a T1 WAN link? For example, what programs and services are causing the most data traffic, are there any large data transfers taking place on the line (if so, what is the source and destination i.p's, etc etc

Thank You

Hi,

My recommendation is NetFlow, its pretty simple to enable on your switches and routers (available in most IOS/CATOS)and you can download free/trial software to your PC/Server which will track and graph the data.

In terms of what it achieves you'll get the items you where looking for and a substantial amount more.

Crannogs Netflow Tracker is a great piece of software if you can find a trial btw.

The router is a 2500 series cisco.

I tried to enable it on a 2600 router and I had a similar isseu

I have 2 options when I tried the ip route-cache ?

The 2600 is running version 11.3 and the 2500 is running 10.3, if this matters.

Can you enable netflow on the ethernet and serial interfaces?

Any help would be appreciated, thanks

Suspect that you'll probably need to upgrade your IOS... it may require a specific feature set... check the cisco website IOS feature tool for the IOS you need.

For a free Netflow tracker see the website below.
