hello
I hope someone can help me. I currently work as a Field Support Engineer for the Post Office, but I will soon be changing jobs and working for a local secondary school as Network Manager.
There appears to have been no documenting of the network as it has grown, as many different people have been administering at different times.
I would like your views on how to approach this situation, causing the least amount of disturbance to the network but enabling me to gather as much info as possilbe.

many thanks to you all in advance

If it is an NT domain, try this utility

It will list your shares (including hidden), users (shows you whose password is set to never expire), and the services. I think it only runs on NT machine though.

I am in the same situation. I will try the site listed up above.

But have started taking inventory of the network and equipment meaing.

# and placement of hubs
What computers and servers are connected to the hubs
IP addresses (which PC are manual and which are DHCP)
Inventory of protocols and set ups of various

Its has already made a difference in the network. [sig][/sig]

Thanks, I start on monday so I will keep you posted on how it works [sig][/sig]

I don't know how much detail you need in terms of your individual workstations, but there is a great little cheap program called "Loginfo" which you can run from a login script that will summarize the details of your workstations as people log into the network.
