Win 98SE PC's (IBM) with Intel / IBM / 3COM NIC's. What happens is sometimes when the PC boots the Network Login screen does not come up - just the "Enter your Windows Password" screen. If you login and logout then the correct screen is displayed.

I am thinking it has something to do with either it not receiving a DHCP address in time or the port on the switch still configuring itself (Mixture, many sites have Cisco 2950's; I don't want to setup anything with portfast though).

Any ideas on how to fix this would be appreciated.

Check the registry to see if you have a "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Network\Real Mode Net\AutoLogon=<x> (<x> is a number)" key.

Delete it and reboot.

That should clear up the no logon prompt issue.

[neutral] Nope...registry ain't got that key in it. I did manage to get it to logon the first time around by creating a user profile. I don't particularly like user profiles, but if that's what I have to do, I guess I can live with it.

[ponder] What puzzles me though is that only 4 or 5 machines out of probably 50 or so have this problem, and the systems are pretty much identical, all created from the same drive image. Go figger...

::)

The other thing to do is to add the "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Network\Real Mode Net\AutoLogon=<x> (<x> is a number)" key and set it to "1"

That will force the Logon.
