Guys,
Struggling with this. I have an XP machine which is connected via broadband to the Internet and a Linux machine which I have connected to the XP box via Ethernet. Within Linux how do i go about setting up so I can see the XP machine and share its Internet connection? Sorry if its a daft question and thanx in advance for the help.

HI,

ON linux machine, setup your ip address and make sure you are on the same subnet as winxp. For gateway set as your winxp ip address (LAN ip). In /etc/resolv.conf insert your ISP DNS entry as follow:

search isp.com
nameserver 1.1.1.1
nameserver 2.2.2.2

Hi,

Forgot one more thing. Make sure you enable internet sharing on your broadband connection (XP pc).

It would actually be easier to setup your broadband on the linux machine and have your XP go out through the linux box.

Hi,

You are right. But its his choice I suppose. If he uses linux, then he has to make sure the box is secure enough. I wonder if he familiar with linux.

I guess i'm just past the newbie stage with Linux, and thought getting this up and running would give me a bit more experience. Then i can decide if i want to swap the gateway machine around to Linux. I'll give the suggestions a try though, thanks!! Keep you posted on the progress!!

dbase77,

you said;

I think Linux straight out of the box, is more secure than windoz.

IMHO!

But while we're at it; is there a link somewhere to explain how to setup Linux to share the internet (dial-up) for a couple of windoz PC's?

Sorry to piggyback on this thread, but PcLinuxGuru brought it up!
