I can connect to the linux box from a windows 2000 box using a ssh client. I can ping the server. I can ping the windows 2000 box from the linux if i am connected to it. However, i cannot ping my default gateway, name servers, or any other IP on the network. Any body have any suggestions?

You said you had a subinterface configured?

Post the OP of ifconfig and route -n for us to
decipher.

Destination Gateway Genmask Flags MSS Window irtt Iface
192.168.1.0 0.0.0.0 255.255.255.0 U 40 0 0 eth0

127.0.0.0 0.0.0.0 255.0.0.0 U 40 0 0 lo

0.0.0.0 192.168.1.1 0.0.0.0 UG 40 0 0 eth0

this is what i have. no luck so far figuring this one out. Like i said, if i am ssh'd into the box, then i can ping the ip that i am coming from, thats it. I have a feeling there is some sort of tcpwrappers, or firewall, etc. I am new to linux but have worked quite a bit with solaris, def different.

Try:
route add default gw mydefaultgw address
man route

HTH

i tried that but it says the files exists.

SIOCADDRT: File exists

isnt 0.0.0.0 the same as default? Is there a way I can turn off any ip tables, or firewalls??? Could that be an issue? I am at a loss since everything looks right. thanks for the help so far

What firewall are you using??
