Hi

What is the best possible way of setting up an IP printer without the use of printtool, i have to dial into a linux server and do it via command line?

You need to edit the /etc/printcap. I'd refer to the man page. If you can install other software, I'd highly recommend installing CUPS. It will allow you to configure the printer using a text based browser, like links or lynx.
