This is a strange occurrence that we've had happen about once every three months or so (with no apparent cue). It's a little hard to explain so bear with me.
A set of network files and folders, starting in the middle of one folder, will be relocated to another location on the network share. It's not an accidental drag and drop (we have those too) because it's not a complete move of the first folder (or the parent directory). For example, take the following directory structure:
\\data
\\data\companies\
\\data\functions\
\\data\reports\
\\data\users\
\\data\users\BamBam
\\data\users\Barney
\\data\users\Betty
\\data\users\Dino
\\data\users\Fred
\\data\users\Pebbles
\\data\users\Wilma
and so forth, with each of those have multiple files and folders within. All of a sudden we will get this:
\\data
\\data\companies\
\\data\functions\
\\data\functions\users\
\\data\functions\users\Dino
\\data\functions\users\Fred
\\data\functions\users\Pebbles
\\data\functions\users\Wilma
\\data\reports\
\\data\users\
\\data\users\BamBam
\\data\users\Barney
\\data\users\Betty
\\data\users\Dino
Dino's folder has not been moved in full, with some files and folders still in the original folder and the others in the new one (the cutoff happening cleanly based on name order). The other folders have been moved in full.
This is not a drag and drop oops, because that would have taken the entire Dino folder. For that matter, you would have to drag and drop the entire User directory to keep that directory structure. The new \\data\functions\users\ and \\data\functions\users\Dino folders have creation dates of today, the others have retained there original creation dates (including subdirectories of \\data\functions\users\Dino).
Something else I just noticed today is that the newly created folders \\data\functions\users\ and \\data\functions\users\Dino have the same network user id listed as Owner, but this person has been nowhere near these files and would have no idea how to make this happen if they wanted to.
Both myself and our external IT support are at a lost to explain why this is happening.
Thanks for any help!!!!
Paul
