Recently (about 2 weeks now) I have noticed that when access files from a network share on a Windows 2003 Server R2 that when you close the file the "temp" file that was created for that is not removed. Then when the user attempts to access the file again it says that it is in use and can only be viewed in "Read-Only" Mode. All clients are Windows XP with SP2 or SP3.
This applies to Access Db, word and excel docs and even custom written programs. There is no reasoning behind it. If I open a Word doc, then Save As, then close my program. Then open that new file up, it tells me that it is Read Only. It doesn't happen all the time though which makes it weird.
I have checked permissions and that user is the only user able to access the files. I am NOT using DFS (so DFS replication share violations don't apply). If I go to see what files are being access in Computer Management, that file is NOT listed there.
If it is an Access db I can see the temp db file created, but I can't delete that either even though I have closed the program.
The only way to currently fix the issue is to reboot the server.
If anyone has ANY ideas on how to further troubleshoot this I would be forever grateful.
