Hi,

I am running a small home network with 2x win98se machines and one NTbox set up as a stand alone server - my problem is that I seem to be getting loads of collisions - detected by the crash led on my hub and running the network monitor on the ntbox.

Any ideas anyone??

ethernet works by using collisions to police traffic, collisions are a inherent part of the ethernet standard.

That said, one wants as few collisions as one can, so there is bandwidth left for packets that do succeed. If you are having more than 25% collisions, it is time to get a full duplex switch, instead of the nice cheap hub. I love everyone til they prove otherwise, sadly some prove otherwise SO quickly

Although you can expect some collisions on an ethernet network, you shouldn't be experiencing so many as to cause serious disruption to your networks performance. With only three nodes you should get hardly any at all (as long as your protocols are set up correctly). Providing that your PC's are set up correctly, you can usually put it down to the physical layer. I would check:

1. The cabling (often overlooked when experiencing ethernet problems)

2. The hub (faulty ports can cause collisions)

3. Faulty NIC (had this one myself recently!!)

Hope that this gives you some ideas!

Regards

Chris.

I've found this more often than not caused by a bad NIC. Jeter@LasVegas.com

Jim is right
Try a switching hub this should stop your problems

Check the duplex settings of the NIC, a duplex mismatch will give you a really dirty network.
