Network Card only transmits, no rec'v

A friend presented me with a question about what may have caused his problem. Apparently after installing some type of system scan (or virus scan) software "similar to Symantec's", the Windows 2K PC acquired a problem where the Syslink network adaptor quit receiving. He thinks it caused a registry change. The card is installed Ok, with latest drivers, etc. Everything was fine before the install. Any ideas where to start troubleshooting this?
 
Under Network Adapter, Properties, uninstall TCP/IP. Then reinstall TCP/IP. You Winsock stack entries in the registry are corrupted, and this should repair them. If you want to be thorough, run regedit and delete the two keys under HKLM\System\Software\Services Winsock, and Winsock2. Then do the uninstall, reinstall routine.

AdAware is notorious for this result. But others do it as well.
BTW, this will not work under XP. You need to use this:
