Preliminary specs for library, 12-15,000 sq ft, no interior walls. Network design that is flexible and expandable. Any ideas? Install in floor? Future access how? Wireless? Need latest and futuristic ideas!

Drop a couple of data jacks to each work area and also provide power jacks for the "wall warts" of a wireless unit. The hard points gives access without the special wireless NICs which would be useful for printers, rovers, sniffers etc. The wireless has a range of something like 1,000 feet ( more if you spend some serious cash) so keep that in mind. The range is also very dependent on what is in the room. If the room has a alot of steel in the walls for structual reasons, your range will be less. If it's very open, you may get more range. This is where you need to work with the vendors very closely AND have them demo it.. dont take the salesman's word on how well it works.
I dropped cable into one place not in the walls but in the floor with pop-covers.. just like you would do for microphone jacks on a stage. That way you can have the jacks right by the tables instead of having drop cords stretched across the floor.

Water is a very bad conductor of a wireless signal. Trees in an outdoor setting kill a signal as fast as a lead wall from all the water in the wood and leaves. I don't know how this translates into the by-product of paper, but all those books could hurt. Just a thought...
If you have a ceiling that is considerably higher than your book shelves, you should be OK if you try wireless. You'll still want to have a vendor do a site survey so you'll know exactly how many access points you'll need and where to place them. Often times you can get a written guarantee that promises to pay for additional antenneas (sp?) if their site survey is wrong. Monkeylizard

Also, think about CAT-6. You don't want to install CAT-5 only to have it become a thing of the past shortly after you cut the ribbon on your new place. Monkeylizard
