I work at a pc repair shop. As of the last month or so I am constantly running into the same issues and a re-install doesn't even seem to work some times. Its driving me MAD!!! After removing spyware, adware ,and other bugs I will constantly have the issue of connectivity resulting with a "page cannot be displayed" error. I used to use lsp fix or w2fix or winsockxpfix as a regular fix for these issues. But anymore they seem to never work. Even in the 98's nand me's I used to be able to manually remove the appropriate files and registry keys to force windows to re-install new ones and that would work every time. But anymore that doesn't work either. I can use multple nic cards and different slots on the boards and try everything I can think of from a sofware point of view to try and fix this constant problem but it almost always comes down to a reload and then I find that the newer drivers out there seem to cause the same thing if I use them so I go with the older ones more than not to get connectivity. Am I the only one pulling my hair out over this issue. Please some one elaborate on this for me so I can fix this issue without a re-install. XP is the one that really is a problem it seems. Thanks in advance for any input on this.

A lot of the XP repair utilities you are using will make matters worse with Service Pack 2. In addition, some of the existing un-updated or un-patched versions of firewall and network security software if used in an SP2 firewall setting will do this. Zone Alarm and NIS come to mind.

This, in combination with some recent malware (seen since end-November 2004) has made things more difficult.

For XP SP2 machines:

Winsock stack repair
Start, Run, CMD
netsh winsock reset catalog

(Wait for the prompt to return that a restart is needed).
Reboot the computer.

TCP/IP service stack repair

. First try
netsh int ip reset resetlog.txt
Reboot when finished.

. Second try
Install TCP/IP on top of itself

A) Open the properties window of the network connection
B) Click Install
C) Click Protocol, then Add
D) Click Have Disk
E) Type the path to the nettcpip.inf file, for example: c:\windows\inf, and click
OK (if you try to click Browse, then browse to the \inf folder, it may not show up
in the list).
F) You should now see "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)" in the list of available
protocols. Select it and click OK.
G) Restart the computer

Finally, there have been a lot of network adapter driver updates post-SP2. I disagree with you, if using XP SP2, particularly wireless adapters, do the upgrade.

It would benefit you to keep the newer driver set from the chipset manufacturers and try them rather than the OEM manufacturer drivers. SiS, RealTek, ADMTek, Intel and others have all released post-SP2 drivers.

bcastner, I must be doing something wrong. When I type in "netsh winsock reset catalog" the machine gives the message that winsock reset catalog is not a reconizable command. I still need to know how to manually fix winsock and tcp/ip settings and files in XP but just to let you know that the problem here at the shop with multiple machines ans OS's was a router issue. A linksys was fading in and out of service. I still believe it to be very important to know how to work around the winsock fixes I have on disk. So Let me again thank you for all yuor input and please tell me what simple step I'm missing in the command line of your solution as mentioned in your first reply to me. lmwtech

Netsh winsock reset catalog is an XP SP2 only command. You do not want to run WinsockFixXP or WinsockFix on an SP2 machine, but they work perfectly well on any version of Windows other than XP SP2.

The Microsoft KB underlying the XP pre-SP2 discussion:
WinsockFix.exe does this, as should you, if you are doing manual changes on pre-SP2 machines:
There are special considerations for wireless:
There are often newer drivers post-SP2, as I mentioned above, for all adapters.

And finally, there are sometimes intractible issues with any install Antivirus, firewall and general internet security programs. Uninstall all (disabling does not work, nor does a simple MSCONFIG entry), disconnect from the internet, and try a repair reinstallation of XP.

AAHHH..... I see said the grasshopper....my eyes have suddenly become open!!! Just some humor there. It all does make sense now as I should have put two and two together after your first reply. Again I must thanbk you ever so much for your help!!!! lmwtech
