I am running a Compaq Proliant ML350 Server with Smart Array 532 controller and 2 32gb Hard Drives and 1.0gb Ram

I am running the following software on the server:-
Netware 6 Support Pack revision 01
Server Version 5.60.01
NDS Version 10310.17

Zenworks V3.02
Groupwise 6.0.1
Veritas Backup Exec V9.0 Revision 4170 Server Version

Periodically the CPU usage on the server jumps to 100% for no reason and almost freezes up the machine for about 10 minutes, it then comes back to a usage level of 5% or so and runs fine, then several minutes later the process is repeated. All hardware fault options have been exhausted and the Compaq engineer believes it is probably 1 of the Netware modules that is corrupt and grabbing too much CPU access. I have booted up the machine without Groupwise and Backup Exec running and the problem was still evident. Does anyone have some thoughts on what may be causing the problem.

Lets find out what thread is doing it, that will help point us in the right direction.

To find the thread that is taking up the clock cycles, use the MONITOR.NLM and go to the "Kernel" menu option, then choose "Threads". This will show you the busiest threads, and should state the NLM that is taking the cpu cycles. The one thing that will throw this off is if the problem is a Server## thread. These don't tell you much, and can make it a bit difficult to troubleshoot.

Have you tried installing Support Pack 2?

There are also only 61 hits when you search the Novell support site for "Utilization" in the NetWare 6 support section. Maybe one of those TIDs can help you. Brent Schmidt CNE, Network +

Try applying sp2, and there is also a post sp2 update. I believe that the update resolves some utilization problems.

Hi

Complete DS Health checks on the server with special attension to Servers Known to this database. It sounds like the DS is attempting to locate a Server\Device which is not responding. Maybe your old server which you upgraded from is still in the tree or similar.
