I inherited a Netware 3.12 with 3.2 enhancement and know very little about Novel
I am currently using an old PII 350 as our server.

Unfortunately our server crashed yesterday. I believe the mother board failed ( it gets power but will not boot)
I removed the 20GB IDE, Nic and Video card from the crashed system and placed it in a desktop PC with similar motherboard and P2 and 512mb, works fine, actually faster then the old server…

My question, is it possible to image my 20GB drive to a 40GB drive build a new server
and add the 40GB to the new server.

Is a P4 compatible with Novell 3.12 or should I look for a PIII?

Thanks

I have a client that is running 3.12 on a Dell system. I think it's around 900MHz or so, and I think that would make it a P4.

honestly though, 3.12 hauls ass on a Pentium 166. Don't know if you'll gain much by putting in a p4 as compared to a p3. Especially if you're using IDE drives.

Hi, Nahme

No problem running 3.2 on a P4, though as Marvin quite correclty says Novell servers are very rarely CPU bound so going to a fast chip won't buy you much. Lots of memory on the other had certainly will (big disk cache) especially when running IDE drives. Also a faster nic can help a lot, just be sure you have Novell 3 compatible drivers.

I have several custs running 3.12 patched to 3.2 on Dell PowerEdge 600sc server boxes with Intel Pro 100 nics and they are very happy with them.

ServerMagic from PowerQuest will transfer to a new hdd just fine, but you will need .ham drivers to support large disks - see the FAQs for that. I don't know about using Ghost, though in theory it should work - maybe someone else has done that.

Jock,
I didn't think that it was possible to image (used loosely) a 20 GB HDD (including SYS:) into a workable netware server on a 40GB. Therefore can you tell me the source of ServerMagic.
