Running netware 3.12 with an Adaptec 2940UW controller and IBM 8G SCSI drive. The server volumes and data were migrated from another server. Intermittently the server locks up with messages on the console about write errors and it dismounts the volumes.
I have downloaded the latest Adaptec 7870 driver and applied patches to netware. The netware software was upgraded to 3.20.
I am on my second set hard drives.
Any suggestion?

What is the server? (IBM, Compaq, Clone?)
Some things to think about or check:
Do you have the SCSI termination set properly?
Try moving the controller card itself to a different slot.
You said second set of drives. Does that mean you are mirroring?
Is there anything else connected to the same SCSI chain, like a tape or CD-ROM drive? If so, try removing it or changing the order of devices in the chain.

How did you setup the drives? Did you low level format and low level verify the drives? Did you double check the SCSI ID#s and terminations? What value did you set the transfer rate? Sync transfer? How much ram to support the volume space? Is support for drives greater than 1 gig disabled? Do you have other drives on the SCSI chain? Have you tried this question over at <A HREF=" TARGET="_new"> and asked in the forums (it's free BTW)
I've got basically the same problem with a Dell 4100/200 raid server using Adaptec 7800 controller and IBM Ultrastar drive and trying to load Novell 3.12. I can get the computer to recognize the drive and install part of Novell on the C: partition but Novell says there are no drives to partition when I load install.nlm.

I say drive above because I plan to mirror if I can ever get this first on working.

What I have found out so far is:
In checking the IBM site there is a bulletin about adaptec controllers and IBM drives where 68 to 50 pin conversion is not a good deal and some kind of terminations need to be done. I haven't done that yet.

There is some sort of NWPA_UP.exe file from Novell that may be needed but nothing I have found is any where near clear about that.

It also appears that there are some newer 7800/2940 drivers at adaptec that can be had but again their verbage is not at all clear.

I haven't done the above thing because I am not that familiar with setting up a Novell server and I have been searching the net to try to find a clear solution.

If anyone can help it sure would be appreciated.

I had the same problem before with almost the same setup. I finally replaced the drive that kept dismounting, and no problems since. It might take a low level format, or the drive might be flaky.
