I thought that the minimum memory for a Netware 6 server was 256Mb but I've seen articles and documents that suggest that for upgrades (In-place etc) 180Mb will work.
Can anyone clarify this for me as I need to be sure bearing in mind I need to pass my CNE upgrade exam soon!

Thanks in advance for any help

Well, for your exam I would defiantely tell you to use what the book tells you. DO NOT base a NW 6 install on what you may have heard. If the book says 256MB then Novell's exam answer will be 256MB.

Real World, it may just work with 180. You would have to try it to see if it does...whats the worse that can happen, it say NO way since you dont have enough RAM.

As Mr.Greenwood said, the exam answer will be whats int he book. If you have less than 256, you will get one of the pink pop ups telling you that 256 is recomended, but it will not stop the install. I have installed NW6 on a system with only 32MB of ram. I have seen my kids clean their room faster than this server ran, but it worked.

Just FYI, NW5.1 will want a minimum of 192MB, and NW6.5 wants a minimum of 512mb

The interesting thing about NetWare 6.5 is that even though it will technically run okay with less than 512MB, the install will not allow you to continue unless you have more than that.

For example, I imaged a machine with their Digital Air 6.5 CD onto a system with only 380MB ram, and it seemed to work fine. But when trying to do a clean install, I got the "Not enough Memory" error and was forced to abort.

Hey Farmer man, back to your original question, it's also important to remember that the Novell tests are generally based on the first release of an OS. Even if certain things change due to a service pack release, you will be tested on the 6.0 version without a patch (unless the book specifically states a service patch applies)..

So if you have patched your test server, you may find anomalies between the book and what you actually see on your server.
