I know this is the Netware 5 board but I'm covering all bases.
Anyone try out the Netware 6 Beta? I've been running it for a few months and last evening the server abended. It seems non recoverable. I get Abend on P00: Free detected corrupt trailing redzone for the node 0xD3DA4280, node size 4632

Running process NWMKDE.NLM
Stack: <stack dump>
If anyone has experiences any netware 6 errors like this please contact me.
Thanks,
Domenick

This is why it was a Beta version:) Maybe it had a timebomb in it that was supposed to do this. Was this server in a production environment?

I don't know if its the same as NW51, but check for the abend.log file on the SYS volume if you can get that far. That will tell you information about the abend if its software related. Also, boot the server with server.exe -NA, to skip the autoexec.ncf file. Remove the NWMKDE.NLM from any startup scripts you see.

Well I've tried to get the server back up. No, it wasn't a production server. It was strictly for testing. I tried to start the server without loading autoexec, startup or directory services. It continued to abend on bootup. I was not able to access the sys volume at all. I ended up wiping the system. I'm going to reinstall and start from scratch. Would have been nice to know what the problem was. It even abended while doing a core dump. We'll see if it happens again after I reinstall it.

Hey Dom,

Nice to see you are still tinkering with finding new ways to break a Novell server. Way cool. I was just getting ready to install NW 6 at home and play with it, if I am able to reproduce the error you got, I will let you know.

Just an FYI, my new work email address is mgreenwood@adestagroup.com drop me a line when you get this.

I would have suggested taking out the multi processor driver in startup. There have been a number of issues with the multi processors and DS. There are a couple of patches out now for it.

I've got quite a few NW6 installs out now and the servers are behaving, touch wood and all that.

That's a good thing to remember. Thanks for the tip.

You know, I wouldnt trade my Novell server for a Microsoft server any day. I would rather deal with the minor inconveniences with Netware than to deal with re-starting a MS server and dealing with security holes, and performance.

DrMarkGreen, I couldn't agree with you more! I have 2 NetWare 5.1 servers that have been up for a few months now, and I don't even have to do anything to them. The only reason they were down a few months ago was because I had to replace a failing UPS. As far as my Windows 2000 servers go, I have to babysit them everyday. I have to examine logs, install security updates, restart them, figure out why services aren't starting, etc. I can't wait to migrate those Windows servers to NetWare and Linux:)

I'll agree on the security updates. But I run Netware 4x/5x, Win2k/NT4.0, and Red Hat 7(though I'm not really experienced with it). Aside from the security updates on the win2k, and the occassional service pack, our servers are running pretty smooth. We have had alot of issues with the Netware boxes only because of configuration problems, but everything is humming along pretty well. Netware is by far the easiest to have to administer. I just hope MS can come up with a solution for applying updates without rebooting, but I doubt that will ever happen.

What about Microsoft's new licensing system? Compare it to NetWare and Linux. With NetWare 6, you buy 1 server license and you can install as many NetWare 6 servers as you want. You can put up 150 NetWare 6 servers with 1 server license and a single CAL for each workstation. Linux and Unix are free. With Windows you need a server license for every server and a Windows CAL for every user and then more licenses depeding on what your running. Compare Exchange to Lotus Domino. Microsoft is way out of line making everyone pay this much for such an inferior product, and the sad part is, people are actually paying it.

Licensing, forgetabout it. MS's licensing is so screwed up that they don't even know how it works. You can ask 10 MS reps and get 10 different answer. Linux has the only truely understandable licensing policy I know of, lol, followed by Novell as a close second.
