After months of working with Windows Server 2003 and Active Directory in my test lab, I have decided to not use it. Is it still possible to purchase Netware 6.5, or does Novell only sell Linux now?

Second question - does anyone know if Dell or HP servers will still support Netware?

Dell is going to stop supporting it, you really have to be careful when you buy a server. HP servers still support it. Go with Proliant. Another option is to virtualize it. then you dont' have to worry about vendor hardware.

You cannot technically buy NetWare 6.5 (I don't think). Instead, you buy OES2 (Open Enterprise Server 2), and this gives you the ability to install NetWare (branded as OES2 NetWare Kernel). The NetWare kernel IS NetWare 6.5. Same thing.

With OES2, you can either install NetWare 6.5 bare metal or you can virtualize it on the SLES XEN kernel.

Oh, for reference, here is the product generations for NetWare starting at 5.1:

NetWare 5.1
NetWare 6.0
NetWare 6.5
Open Enterprise Server (Included SLES9 and NetWare 6.5 Kernel Options)
Open Enterprise Server 2 (Includes SLES10 and NetWare 6.5 Kernel)

I wouldn't swim upstream. I'd go with Windows Server 2008 or OES on Linux. The Netware kernel is pretty much abandoned by the side of the road. It's still alive, but it's not being developed much. Novell wants it to go away and have people move to Linux.

OES2 it is then. I knew that CLE book would come in handy someday...........................
