I have currently a 3.12 and a 5.1 Netware server and want to replace both with a one Bigger and better 5.1 server.

Now I will be using the 50user license and server license for 5.1. the questions I have is

Should I install the server offline and then incorporate it after the install is complete or can I install it while attached to the network so I can transfer data from the old servers to this server??

I guess I really need to know what is the best way to acomplish what I want to do?? I tried installing the server into the exsisting NDS tree but it gave me a error stating it was unable to install server into tree but yet when you go to the NDS tree the server object shows up ...

This is only my second install of a Novell server though I have been working with Novell (all version) for years, so I know the most of the ins and outs.

Thanks in advance

Hi

I would install it into your existing NDS tree for the reasons you stated and easy of moving files\users around.
What you will need is the Admin username and password for the existing NDS - you will need rights to the root. Anotehr is the servers need to be able to communicate with each other, not just ping by IP but also DNS - add an "A" record to your DNS Server which represnts your new server IP address. You will need to remove the server from the tree if you are going to attempt it again, check in dsrepair as there are a number of options which allows you to communicate with other servers and see other server in the NDS replica's etc.
The Old server could become a the primary time source and\or the backup server if you need, hell you might want to keep it around as an archive server or just to keep a Read\write replica of your NDS.
If you get an error when adding to your NDS tree, then investigate that error, google it or post it here with some details and the guys will answer it pretty quick. Netware often makes you jump thru a few hoops to get it to work.

Good luck

Dave
