I am upgrading my existing NW4.11 server to NW5.1. I have a Dell Poweredge 2300 server with 2 processors and I have heard that Nw5.1 does not work well with more than one processor. Has anyone heard of this.
Any other input would be greatly appreciated.

Actually its suppose to be the opposite. Netware 5.1 is suppose to work great with SMP processing (more than one processor) however, you may want to jump on support.novell.com and do a search on SMP AND NW5.1 and see if there are any related issues.

From my understanding in studying the 4.11 to 5.x update course, SMP is the preferred method, however, there are limitations.

ex. If the server were to abend, the abend log will not update. etc. Thats probably the one known issue that I do not like.

Other than that, the O/S itself with SMP enabled, is suppose to fly.

Mark C. I will be achieving my CNE 5 in the near future, hopefully before Novell's CCR deadline. I also have my Bachelors
NetWare with 2 processors is faster that with a single processor however, it doesn't scale as well as other OSs in a multi-processor environment. NetWare with 1 processor in some circumstances may be faster the other OSs with multi-processors. It's all a matter of the hardware configuration and how each OS is optimized.

So bottom line.. you don't lose anything by having the second processor in the system and with SMP you gain performance but it will not double the speed (or get anywhere close).
