Max number of files...I dont think that there is a max number of files, but moreso a max number of directories (depth) and a max length for file names including paths.
If I recall, from the root directory to where the file exists can not be more than 256 characters in length. As far as max directory depth, you can look at your server setting to see what you have this set at. I think the number is fairly high so it should not be an issue.
