Netware 4.11 disk performance

I am trying to copy an entire subdirectory (an image copy) to a different volume on the same server, for backup purposes. The subdirectory is about 2.8 GB.

The first time I tried, it took > 100 minutes to copy 2.8 GB.

Then I got onto the novell support and did this "SET MAXIMUM CONCURRENT DISK CACHE WRITES=400"

The server now takes 20 minutes to copy the 2.8 GB.

I am trying to copy the subdirectory (image) in 5 to 10 minutes.

Question #1 - are there any more SET parameters I can tweak to speed things up more?

Question #2 - are there any utilities out there (nbackup or others) to help me copy this image off to another volume on the same server?

There are quite a few you can tweak to speed things up. Increase the number of directory cache buffers the maximum should be identicle to whatever your packect receive buffers are.


SET CONCURRENT DIRECTORY CACHE WRITES = 100 (Novell Default is 100 you can go up to 500)
SET DIRECTORY CACHE ALLOCATION WAIT TIME = 0.2 Sec

SET MAXIMUM CONCURRENT DISK CACHE WRITES = 750 (Novell standard)
SET DIRTY DISK CACHE DELAY TIME = 0.3 sec
SET MINIMUM FILE CACHE BUFFERS=500 (Up to 2000)
SET NEW SERVICE PROCESS WAIT TIME = 0.3 seconds

Please review the TID before making changes to any server and review each setting as each one will affect the server differently.
