this is strange.... maybe...

i was checking a website i did some work on, and when i checked it in netscape (on my linux box) a file that is supposed to download opens up as a sort-of messed up text file. ( it is actually a MS Word document i changed the extension of to .zzz so it would'nt open in a browser)

it is fine in IE5, and this only happens under linux, i checked around the web and other files like this do the same thing..... is it my set-up or is this what will happen?

hope you know what i am getting at, thanks for any input [sig][/sig]

Think you mean its opening files you want to download

Press shift before clicking on the download in that case.
Shift+click -> will download it to hard disk like in IE etc in windows. [sig][/sig]

thats what is happening alright, but it does not handle the file properly, since it is a MS Word document.

it also happens if i use a *.pdf file though too.

oh well, such is life.

thanks for the tip!

MS Word and PDF files have their own, propietary format. Unless you have an editor or reader with the appropriate converter (filter) they will not be interpreted correctly. I have no idea who all Microsoft has licensed the information necessary to produce a filter to. PDF format is proprietary/owned by Adobe.

I have not checked any programs such as WordPerfect or Star Office for the filter/ability to read MS Word document, but there are PDF readers available for LINUX. Some are shareware and I'd bet Adobe has one.

You must configure the webserver so that it sends over the right content type for that extention.
