I have been running Linux since Nov 98, started with Slackware 3.6 now at 7.1. I am currently running kernel 2.4.9. I am on an AMD K6-ii 300mhz box with 288 megs of ram and 4 gigs hd. my only disappointment, is running netscape on the box. From my very first install, Netscape 4.2 I think, right up to 4.78 which I use right now, the damn thing keeps crashing.
I have read all the faqs, turned off java (the screen looks distorted and it still crashes),
made sure MOZILLA_HOME=/usr/lib/netscape is included in my environment variable (it shows up when I type env). I am at a complete loss here as to what else to do next.
Any tips would be appreciated

you're not alone. just about everyone I have talked to has the same problem. I currently use opera - - and when I run into a site that does not seem to support it I use netscape. but opera seems to be faster and prone to less crashes. netscape has been like this for as long as I can remeber and it seems that nothing is done about it. netscape 6 is no better.

You may also want to take a look at installing GALEON...

It is a scalled down version of Mozilla. It uses the mozilla rendering engine (so you need to install mozilla) but otherwise it is smaller, and more stable...

Thanks guys

I tried Opera way back, maybe its time to have a second look. As for Galeon, one of the requirements is Gnome > 1.20. Well I don't like Gnome or KDE (too bloated) and the version of Gnome that I have installed is < 1.20, so I guess I will have to decide
if its worth upgrading for the sake of getting Galeon

Thanks for your input, guys

Hi,

I also personally use opera more than any other browser. The bit I'm most addicted to is the multiple-tabbed 'pages' within a single window which I find much better than opening several windows. Also are you aware that they now have a plug-in capable linux version, i.e. version 5.05 . You can get that from :

You may also need to install openmotif if you have dependency errors : --> .

Galeon is my second choice because it also has the tabbed pages feature and is based on mozilla. Depending on what you've got installed, you might have to get an older version because the latest ones needed mozilla 0.92 when I last looked and this caused me problems with ximian gnome & nautilus not being quite so up to date on the mozilla front.

Actually, I have to say I've never had any problems running any version of Netscape under Redhat and, for some sites, it supports some of the non-standard stuff that is out there whether you like it or not...

Regards

Hey guys

I got Opera. Works like a charm, and hasn`t crashed once in 3 hours. Your suggestions are appreciated
