I'm running HP-UX 11i on a C180 Workstation.

Network is up.

DNS is working.

telnet is working.

ftp is working.

Netscape is working for all systems found in /etc/hosts, but not for any other systems.

I have a direct internet connection, but for some reason, it seems as if Netscape thinks it needs a socket connection.

When I attempt to start netscape, it tells me that I might need to set the environment variable "$SOCKS_NS"...

Netscape can't seen anything beyond my gateway.

Has anyone seen this before?

The browser is set for direct connection to the internet.

No proxy servers are configured.

Is there someplace in HP-UX itself, that might be telling Netscape that a proxy / socksified server exists?

Thanks in advance,

Joe F.

Some troubleshooting steps

Verify that $OV_CONF/ovw.auth has the following:
weber + (should be your hostname)
This is required to enable the cgi-bin process to access the ovw session.
The httpd server must be running on the same box that's running the ovw
session, or a management console. Simon Peter Wickham

Actually, I found the problem, but it doesn't make sense...

The /etc/nsswitch.conf file had the following entries:

passwd: files
group: files
hosts: files dns
services: files dns
networks: files dns
protocols: files dns
rpc: files
publickey: files
netgroup: files dns
automount: files
aliases: files

The funny part is, that this did not work...

I want the system to search files before accessing dns, but in this case, when I switched the order, and placed dns before files, the browser now works...

Strange behavior...

Does anyone have an idea of why this might work this way?

TIA

You can change this by using folling syntex. give it a try.
hosts file [NOTFOUND=continue] dns

Thanks Patel,

I'll try this...

However, I thought that "NOTFOUND=continue" was the default, and didn't need to be specified...

Is this not correct?

TIA
