Sorry if this seems off-topic (although I could find no more appropriate forum to post to), but I thought that people here might like to know about NN8. Accoring to this article:

NN8 is based on Firefox, but also supports the Internet Explorer engine, and so will be able to render more sites than Firefox.

Interesting news... but I wonder how relevant this really is, given that the rendering differences in standards compliant mode are less and less.

From the Netscape 8 pages:
Netscape Browser 8 offers the best of both worlds by combining the intuition of Firefox with the user-friendly capabilities of Internet Explorer.
WTF?

What this apparently means in practice is that each site is rated for trustworthiness, and the most trusted sites are rendered with the IE engine whilst the rest get the FF one. I suppose that makes sense if you use FF exclusively for its security benefits, but it's rather a shame to downgrade CSS support on "trusted" sites in this way. Hopefully you can turn it off.

I don't think it's going to take the place of FireFox on my desktop anyway...

I just downloaded NN8 to see how it was going to be supporting FF/IE at the same time. Interestingly, I noticed at the lower left hand side of the page there was a little firefox icon. When clicking on it a menu appears where you can "Display like Firefox" or "Display like Internet Explorer". I guess that's how they support both at the same time, by letting you switch between the 2. What I found interesting was that there was no "Display like Netscape" option, [lol]

Maybe they should rename them:

Display correctly
Display incorrectly with odd quirks

;o)

Actually the Netscape marketing guys are missing a trick - it's the first browser with built-in time travel capability. Just one click, and your page goes 5 years back in time...
