For the past year we have been using Netsaint which is a Linux based program that monitors computers, routers and switches and sends alert emails when those devices go down (or are no longer pingable). We've decided to migrate away from Linux so I am trying to find something to take it's place. Unfortunately Netsaint was free. Is there anything out there that is similar that would run on a Windows Server? It's a great program. It's very valuable to know when a server goes down or a data circuit goes down.

You are in luck. VMWare has a Nagios appliance, so you can now run Nagios under Windows (kind of). Install the free VMWare player on your machine, download the Nagios appliance and run the Linux VM inside of Windows. Management is happy that you are running Windows and you still get the Nagios (formerly Netsaint) functionality.

Unfortunately it would require that someone was logged in at the console in order for VMWare to be running.
