netPBM installation

I'm trying to get netPBM running, in support of a php script-based photo gallery/thumbnail setup. I don't have shell-level access to our web host, I can only use FTP. Can someone give me advice on where I can put the executables for netPBM (I downloaded the binary distribution files)? It wants to default to /usr/local/bin but I am unable to see that directory.
