I have a client running Sol 10.
Netmasks file in /etc and /inet both show a 16 bit mask which is correct.
But when I run ifconfig -a it shows that adapter using a 8 bit mask.

Where is ifconfig pulling the 8 bit from? Am I missing a file somewhere?

Thanks,

If you are using NIS, netmasks is set by the NIS. Take a look at file /etc/nsswitch.conf. There is a netmasks entry.

If you are running NIS, the entry should look like:
netmasks nis [NOTFOUND=return] files.

If you are not running NIS, the entry should look like:
netmasks files

If you are running NIS and want to set a different netmask on your Solaris 10 client, edit the /etc/nsswitch.conf file and set the netmasks entry like:
netmasks files nis

If you are setting up the device at boot time then the netmasks file is used ... if you are setting it up after booting then the netmasks file is ignored (at least for interface creation)
