Customer ran out of disk space on c: drive on Windows 2000 Server (stand-Alone). Standard config (AD, DNS, DHCP, etc).
Server was basically locked when I arrived. After re-booting, it takes approx 20 minutes to get to login screen. Input admin user name and password and after another 10 minutes and error message pops up that says login was not possible because the netlogon service is not running.

Every fix or solutions assumes that I am able to get to a desktop, which I cannot. If I can't log on, I get no desktop.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Can you even get into safe mode? If you can then hopefully you can free up some space.

If not already done so then move the page file to another partition.

Sounds like you may have a conflict in hostname or IP address causing the netlogon service to fail.
Try NBTSTAT -N and see if this is the cause
If the server has multiple NIC cards. make sure that ONLY ONE has WINS servers defined or both NIC's will try to register and end up in conflict as well.

Hope this helps!

Thanks for the input....BUT...I cannot get to the desktop (safe mode or otherwise), ,cannot get to the recovery console because it also requires a login (netlogon is not running) so that is out of the question. I pulled the hard disk, put it in another PC and free'd some space (1.2Gb). But I still cannot login (normal/safe/recovery).
