All,

I have the following problem with my Broadband Connection

I called in registered the Motorola SB5100 modem as I should. It was connected directly to my computer at the time of install. It worked flawlessly and still does when connected directly to the computer. I, like many of you, have more then one computer in my home, which i want to network and share the broadband connection with.

I have a Netgear RP614v2 router and a Motorola SB5100 modem. When i throw the router into the loop, the internet connection is intermittment or will drop completely. I have updated the firmware on the Router and the connection doesnt last more then a few minutes. I have also cloned the MAC Address of the computer that was plugged into the modem at install time. I have also rebooted the modem, router and computer (in that order) and it doesnt seem to help the connection. I have done hard resets on the router and cycled the power also. Still no avail.

Does anyone have any idea or suggestions about this.

I am running Windows XP and the Firewall is not enabled.

HELP.......please
Thanks
Steve

Have you tried using a different port on the router? May also be a lousy connection from the pole to the building,
ie: bad cabling, splitters.......

Well, I tried all of that. The pull from the pole to the house, is only a year old. When I bought the house the people didnt have cable to it. So i had it pulled.

I found the problem. It is the router. it is a crappy router. I went and bought a Lynksys 4 port Cable/DSL router. Plugged it in, not one problem, its been working for the last 3 days in a row. So now I have a router that doesnt work with comcast cable internet. Oh well.

The Lynksys is the way to go, it states on the box, it works with ALL ISPs, even lists them on the box.

So problem solved.

Steve

Thanks for the input though.

Glad to hear your running. I re-read your post and noticed
"I called in registered the Motorola SB5100 modem as I should".

You may have been required to give your ISP the MAC address for the Router as well (usually located on the bottom of the case)

You may also have needed to configure the router for use with broadband.

I personally like Netgear Routers.

I did all of the above. Had the Comcast tech on the phone, went through all of that. Configured it for broadband. Did everything. Just wouldnt work. I even upgraded the firmware to the most recent release. Nothing seemed to work. It was very odd. So now I have a Netgear Router i dont need. I guess it will sit and collect dust in the closet.

The only thing that I dont like about the lynksys is the inability to control time of day for certain ip addresses on my lan to access the internet. This was a great feature from my standpoint, because I have 2 children 14 and 10. So it would have been great to be able to automatically limit their usage.

Anyway, I appreciate your help and insight into my delimema.

Steve
