Netgear RP114 - DMZ causes intermittent Internet loss

Hello!

I have a Netgear RP114 Router and it runs great except when I try to add any of my machines to the DMZ. When there is a machine in the DMZ I will periodically lose my Internet connection - but not totally. Basically what I lose is access to anything that requires a DNS resolution.

For example, I can still chat in IRC, I can still connect to and play games by connectig to the IP address of a server. I can still access my own website via the IP address, but if I try to put in the domain name, it will not go through.

Does anybody have any ideas on resolving this issue? Or is it time to get a better router?

I assume you are using DHCP. What is the IP for your DNS server when you are having a problem and when you are not?

This doesn't sound like a router issue to me, however the latest firmware usually doesn't hurt either, in case you haven't updated in a while.

I am using DHCP. I am not sure how to check the IP of a DNS server. I do have the latest firmware.

I didn't think it was a router issue either, I thought it was my ISP. The thing is...if I do not put any computer in the DMZ, I NEVER have this issue. As soon as I put a computer in the DMZ, then I start to get this problem.

Any other ideas?

If you are running w2k or above, you can enter the command 'ipconfig /all' (without quotes) from the command prompt.

This will give you the IP address of the DNS server you are using. The question I am really getting at is whether the DNS server IP changes depending on if you have a machine in the DMZ or not.

It would be most helpful if you could post your results here. Result A without machine in DMZ and Result B with machine in DMZ.

OK, here is what I did:

I opened a command window and ran ipconfig /all
Default Gateway, DHCP Server, and DNS Servers were all 192.168.0.1 which is my router IP.

I then opened the router config, added a computer to the DMZ, and saved it. Then I rebooted and did another ipconfig /all and it was exactly the same.

I am going to leave the machine in the DMZ all night tonight and see if I get any Internet loss issues. I have recently upgraded to Windows XP and who knows....maybe I won't have the problem anymore.

I still appreciate any suggestions though.

The same thing happens to me. I just found this thread. My system is the only sys on the rtr right now, though I had another few systems on it and the problem still occured. This system has been the DMZ. It will randomly stop resolving host names, though I can still ping ip addys. I just removed this sys from DMZ to see if that helps, but I seem to remember it occuring before it was DMZ anyway, just not as often. I found a thread mentioning to put a manual public DNS server and perhaps that might help, I hope it does. This is getting annoying. When the problem occures I need to reset the mdm manualy. BTW, is there a button to click when logged in the mdm to have it reset so I don't need to go to the closet?

hey phazei, sorry i have no solutions for you. the solution for me came when my router got fried during a lightning storm and i had to get a new one. got a hawking and my network runs like a champ!
