Hi all,

I just moved to brooklyn,NY from Chicago,IL. I got myself the cable internet. I have a windows XP desktop and 2 laptops with windows 2000 and windows XP respectively.

Now I wanted to connect this to a common switch (WIRED) and get the broadband to all 3 computers. Now let me tell you something, I had the samekind of setup in Chicago with comcast and I didnt have a problem getting the internet to all 3 computers.....mind you that I had no ROUTERS...just a netgear 5-port switch.

Now when I try the same with cablevision. I dont seem to get the internet to all 3 computers. Instead, I get it to only one of them.

I called up customer care and they said, I had to have a router.

My question is how is that I got internet in Chicago with the same setup and not here. Could anyone help?

I faintly remember the first time I got the internet setup guy in Chiocago, he started to type a IP address and then later, he configured all the systems. IS there something I could do.

Please give your advice....Thanks a lot in advice.

Here in Mississippi, my cable provider (CableOne) has some packages that allow multiple computers and some that don't. (they call them CPEs Customer Premise Equipment) Optimum Online only seems to offer a single IP address, which would mean you do need a router of some sort.

(odd, as of today they all have multiple CPE's. It was not true last time I checked)

I tried to remain child-like, all I acheived was childish.

It sounds like you need a router to make use of NAT, and that your ISP does not provide more than one IP address per connection (which is the norm over here in the UK). A basic router should suit your purposes and they are quite cheap.

Carlsberg don't run I.T departments, but if they did they'd probably be more fun.
