Well, it looks like people have loads of problems with Netgears instructions, so I'm glad I'm not alone! If anyone can help with the following, I'd be very grateful. I've tried searching this and many forums, and have refined my questions as much as possible.

I am using a Netgear FVL328 VPN
I want to connect using a Win XP client.
The client is behind a gateway/router (Netgear DG824M - it allows VPN pass-thru), but won't always be.

Can I just use the Win XP network connection wizard to connect to the VPN?

When setting up an IKE on the VPN, it asks for the local and remote IP addresses OR names. What are the 'names' that there require.

Do I need to forward any ports to allow the VPN connection? My guess is that the VPN should handle this automatically.

Should I be using 3DES encryption and MD5 Authentication to connect using Win XP?

I have tried using the setup document helpfully posted in the forum, but it didn't work either. Is using this set-up a must for the Netgear?

This may sound silly, but if you use this set-up document, how do you establish a connection - do you just find that a new computer is available on your network neighbourhood.

Thanks in advance, and thanks to all who have answered/posed other questions - it all helps for us novices!

Thanks

Jon

I am not too familiar with that router, but if it is IPSec you cannot use the Wizard. Try following these steps, That is for Linksys, but should be very similar setup.

The "names" are hostnames. You should use IP addresses.

You may need to forward the IPSec ports, TCP 50 and 51 and UDP 500.

That is all I can really provide, as I have not used that router....

Thanks,
