NetGear ME102 & MA401 help needed

I'm trying to connect a Dell Inspiron 2600 with an MA401 card to my existing small network, using the ME102 as Access Point into an SMC router. The Dell is running Win XP, the network Win 98 SE. The laptop's connection status shows as "excellent" for both transmitting and receiving, but I get no activity from the indicator lights on the Access Point. The network's shared resources are not visible to the laptop, and the laptop is not visible to the network - although the Active Link light on the router flashes like crazy while the 10/100 light doesn't light at all. I've installed everything twice, but I'm beginning to think the Access Point is defective. Any suggestions?
