Hi.
I'd appreciate it if somebody could help resolve this problem. It should be easy but I can't see it.
I just installed an FR314 (updated to the latest firmware)and a D-Link DSL-300 ADSL modem on a Win2K Pro (SP3) system. It replaces an Alcatel Speedtouch USB.
All the wiring is done with straight-through cables (a single computer on LOCAL port 1 of the FR314 and the modem on the INTERNET port) and all the lights are lighting up properly.
The modem seems to have a problem connecting to the ISP (I started another thread for this on the DSL forum).
Nevertheless, the modem's Config program can't find the modem when it's connected to Netgear but it has no problems when I replace Netgear with a Linksys hub.
The FR314 status screen highlights three errors:

1) Network Time Server could not be detected. The internal clock may not be valid, and time dependent features may not function properly

2) NETGEAR firewall has been deactivated because it cannot obtain a valid DHCP client lease from the server.

3) Your network settings have not been configured; NETGEAR cannot be activated.

4) Network Address Translation cannot be activated since you have not specified a Public Address.

Number 1 must be a firmware bug. I set the time up manually, update and restart, but it forgets my entries.

Number 2 and 4 could be because the modem is not yet connected to the ISP but I'm not sure.

Number 3 seems to be the problem but I have no idea why.

I set up the network mostly as the manual suggests.
NAT with dynamic address, Enable DHCP, NETGEAR IP: 192.168.0.1, dynamic IPs: 192.168.0.2 to .9, DNS server specified manually: 10.1.59.1 (my ISP's DNS), WINS server 0.0.0.0 (I also tried it the same as the DNS).
There's a DOMAIN NAME under DNS where I put the ISP's .com name (or left it blank) but that could be wrong.
There's also a HOST entry under DNS where I put my computer's name (or left it blank) and that could also be wrong.
The modem has an IP of 192.168.1.1 but I don't know how to change it or where it belongs in the Netgear's menu.
I used similar values for NAT with PPPoE (since I need to supply an ID/password to log on) but I had the same errors.
That's about it.
Any idea what is misconfigured or missing?
Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

I would suggest taking things in stages.

First use just the modem and your PC. Make sure the modem connects and that you can reach it's configuration menu, and that you can reach the Internet.

Then insert the FR-314. You should be able to point a web browser at it's IP address (or use Telnet) to configure it.

What should happen in practice is the cable modem gets a dynamically assigned IP address from your provider (or you might have to assign it a static address that they gave you in the configuration paperwork). The FR-314 has both a DHCP client and a DHCP server. The client connects to the WAN link, and picks up the address from the cable modem. The DHCP server then provides services to the PCs on your LAN side.

BTW: Does your provider allow you to use your own cable modem? Also, some require that you tell them what the modem's MAC address is.

Thank you for the response and you're of course right.
I know I'm jumping the gun here but I expected it to be straightforward.
First off, the modem is not connecting properly yet even on its own (I have another thread for it on DSL forum and also asked D-Link for updated Config/Firmware).
As for the ISP allowing it, nobody knows. They give Speedtouch USB modems out but they had some Ethernet ones before. The modem can pass the MAC address if needed but I doubt the ISP looks for that. The USB modem came out of a retail box, plugged in and connected.
So Netgear, at the moment, doesn't get an IP address from the modem (I even have the modem disconnected from Netgear). It looks like I should assign a static address so Netgear can DHCP to its heart's content but where does this IP get assigned? I seem to remember that the WAN address is not user-updateable. Is there some other place for it?
Take care.

You only need a static address if your ISP uses them. And most don't, to prevent their users from running web servers, etc. on a home account (business accounts will get a static address, but you pay more for the privledge).

The Modem provides an IP address to the Netgear. The Netgear then provides a set of (potentially different) IP addresses to the LAN side.

But, until you can verify that your modem works *without* the Netgear inserted, that's the problem you need to focus on. Play with the Netgear after you can get one PC on the internet.

Chip H.
