I am not sure this is the right place to post this but I can't find a NetGear forum....
My brother-in-law has just got a Netgear DG834G Wireless ADSL router. It is working fine for Internet access and only took about 5 minutes to set up ) He has a requirement to use Remote Assistance and issues tickets via MSN Messenger (it's a Software support thing and they must use XP's Remote Assistance). Obviously issueing Remote Assistance Tickets with a NAT router in place causes an issue, the DG834G supports UPnP so this should work and certainly MS's website details this particular scenario as valid ( UPnP is enabled on the PC (Internet Gateway Device Discovery & Control Client is installed and the SSDP service is started). I also installed the UPnP User Interface and the PC 'sees' the Netgear DG834 as an available device. What isn't happening though is the PC using the routers ADSL IP address in the Remote Assistance Tickets. I used the Help & Support Centre and generated an advanced assistance request and created a file. When a UPnP router is in the mix the file should contain the routers 'real' IP address that the PC has discovered via UPnP; this isn't happening and the PC just inserts its own RFC1918 (192.168.0.1) address that it received through DHCP.
The router has some status screens and in the UPnP settings (it's enabled and the announcement timer is 5-minutes before you ask...) there is a UPnP PortMap table that should list all dynamic UPnP Portmaps that have been set up. Nothing ever appears in this table.
I have upgraded the router to the latest 3.01.25 firmware and the problem is still there. There is older firmware available, is it worth downgrading it to version 2.x?
Thanks
Andy
