I have another quick question.. Will my CCNP studies cover SNMP and Netflow in detail? I see this referenced often online and quite honestly it looks really cool but I don't want to put too much into it now if I am going to be hitting it later anyway!

But just in case does anyone have any good SNMP/Netflow links that they would like to share as well as software recommendations and basically any advice in this regard..

(Here is my question mark Burt.. LoL ?)

The old exams didn't have anything on netflow or snmp, but doesn't mean the new ones don't. Best bet is to check the exam blue prints.

I will say this, netflow has saved my butt numerous times at work for tracking stuff down.

New exams still don't have netflow or snmp. When you get your CCNP you'll be amazed at the number of topics not covered even though we use/need those items for production.

For example, setting up NTP is not in the CCNP curriculum but I have seen it show up in the new CCNA security course. Also, AAA with TACACS+ and RADIUS is not heavily covered in CCNP (ISCW) but the CCNA security does a reasonable job of introducing it. Still haven't seen SNMP in any courses but I usually have students set up basic functionality as a "value-add" is class time permits. Password recoveries for the IOS switches and routers are no longer in CCNA or CCNP although I consider that a major skill.

Just a few thoughts.

Thanks guys!
Well I definitely want to begin my SNMP/Netflow track ASAP in my spare time.. Where would you guys recommend as a good starting point? By the way I recently read an article that said that SNMP was very unsecure (believe that it stated something along the lines of SNMP being able to be broken with readily available community strings which would in essence provide the ability to alter VLAN configuration etc.. I can't help it.. still addicted to 2600! LoL) So my question is do you guys have any links/tutorials for beginners and do you have any recommended sites where SNMP/Netflow security is involved as well.. I usually like to incorporate the security side into my studies from the beginning... Easier than trying to relearn later in my opinion.

Thanks again guys...

I may have to go back and take the CCNA Secirity exam!

I don't have any good sources specifically for either. Cisco has a pretty good page showing the 'flow' of netflow.

As for SNMP, we protect ourselves a little bit here, with ACL's only allowing SNMP queries from certain addresses or address ranges. Not perfect, but is better than nothing.

Thanks Lerdalt.. I will let you know when I find something.. Especially if it can help you out in that regard!
