I've got a Netfinity 4000R and am looking to quiet the machine as much as possible. Specifically the CPU fan is very loud. I'm having trouble finding a replacement heatsink/CPU fan that will fit within the limited confines of the 1U case. Any suggestions for quieting in general and/or replacement of the CPU components?

Thanks

Hi there,

Is it the CPU fans, or the four fans in the front of the chassis? I have a 4000r running on my desk and they are loud little boogers. What I found was the biggest noise culprit came from the front four fans. It seems that the fans are a slight bit smaller than the opening that they sit in so they rattle A LOT!! The best we have been able to do is to remove the front faceplate (Carefully, because the fans will fall out) and put a cut piece of a wire tie under the fans and put everyhting back together. Probabaly not Big Blue's prescribed method fixing this problem, but hey it works. Now my 4000 is no louder than any of the other multi fan monsters that I have to work with.

I also noticed those fans. I believe I solved their noise with a similar solution (electrical tape wrapped around the frame of the fans to stop their vibrations and pad them against the case). It's still something like twice as loud as the combination of the two desktop PCs sitting next to it, each with two case fans installed!

My question really has two motivations; how can I quiet the machine AND what am I going to do for a cooling solution when I buy a second processor for it.

But thanks for your suggestion, it does remind me that I should doublecheck those front fans.
