Netbuilder OfficeConnect 3C8832 monitor mode problem

I am using HyperTerminal to try and connect in thru the serial port. I am using a null modem cable to connect the console port to the serial port on a pc. I
have tried hitting the hardware interrupt switch, and then hitting the escape key, as suggested in one of the knowledgebase articles on the 3com web site,but
there is still no response...
Any help is appreciated, as I am trying to reset the root password...

3com null modem cables are crossover cables...there is a pinout listed in one of the posts regarding the pinout.
