I've got an NT 4.0 server with service pack 4 on every 6th to 7th day receives a NetBT error. The message is; A duplicate name has been detected on the TCP network.

The File Server has been in a production mode for almost 2 years, yet the error messages began occuring 3 weeks ago

The File Server has 2 NICS, one internal and one external. The internal card has a private IP address assigned and cannot be seen on the internet.

Any ideas to help troubleshoot the error would be greatly appreciated.

Sounds like the "Phanom server" error. The second NIC is where the duplicate name is coming from. Is the workstation service starting OK? Are you running NETBEUI?

HERE'S THE SOLUTION:

Unbind netbios from your external NIC..

This is a common one guys... come on now!!!

If that external NIC is connecting to the internet, then the WINS client should be unbound from the external NIC. This disables the ability to read NETBIOS info from the machine.
