I have been giving the wonderful job of administering our backup. I have a good understadning of backup processes and have organised our backups properly. My problem is with regards to 2 tapes that have netbackup images on them. I cannot use them for any other backups. As the manual states as soon as netbackup finds it's own backup it will freeze the tape (unless it's a netbackup being done.) How do you totally remove the image from the tape? I have removed the trace in the netbackup DB and expired all images on the tape but still no luck :(

Any helkp would be most aprreciated as the backup site is 400 miles away and I wanna use the tapes that are there for now.

Cheers

Try to use "bplabel", it will mount the tape (if its an autochanger) and erase the label.
Command switches are easy to find (ev for the media id ...)
It will ask if you want to erase the tape if it find a known format on it.
Hope this helps.

Many, many thanks!! One of those little problems, big effects, if you don't know you don't know :)

Cheers

PS Any idea's how more than one retention level can exist? More importantly how to only have one?

Not sure to understand your last question.
But you're able to manage retention levels per media
by going in "Netbackup >> Configure".
Master Server Read and Write Properties.

I think that you must go on "Media" and then there's
an option called "Allow multiple retentions per media".
Don't use it ! because you could have recycling problems.

Bye.
