net use will not work over vpn

I have a vpn set up so that I can get to my 2003 server machine from the internet. Once I log on to the vpn I can click on START - RUN - \\192.168.1.1\myshare and the share will pop up just like expected. However, I can not to a net use x: \\192.168.1.1\myshare. If I try to actually map a drive to the share I get a "system error 67" popup.

Can anybody tell me why I can not map a drive to a resource like this? Is there a work around?
