Hallo Windows Experts,

First off, I am by no means an expert in Windows. I come from the PBX side of things, but need your input.

I find myself in the need to send a message to a particular PC in a windows 2003 domain from the command line. Think along the lines of an alert. All the client PCs are XP SP3, servers are a mix of 2003 and 2008.

Is it possible from one of the servers to send a message like the old net send, from the command line, that will pop up in the foreground of a specific PC (and that PC only) in a 2003 domain?

I have been fiddling around with msg but that appears to be for terminal services and not really relevant here.

Also, I would like that only the server sending the message can actually send, and that the clients cannot send messages between them - if this is possible.

Any input much appreciated.

From Server 03 you can net send but you will need to make sure your Messaging service is enabled on client and server side.

As for 08 and some versions of Windows 7, you cannot do net send any more.

Yes, Vista and a few versions of 7 had msg.exe replace net send but to the best of my research, without a third party app, you cant do it in 08 R2.

Eh - because I didn't know it existed - I very very rarely look into any Windows discussions at all (because I have no advise to give) :)

Thanks!

I have some reading to do. To save me from that - do you have any quick answers (or pointers so I know where to focus my attention) to my questions above?

Not really other than the type of links supplied above.

I find Google a help when researching topics.

OK thanks. I too don't mind research - I always find it helpful to hear from experts in other fields where I should concentrate that research though, thus the question.
