I don't know if this is the correct forum to post into but here goes:-

We have a.net app that has an vb6 ax control on some of the forms. The customer has decided due to a change in their security policy that all the pc's will now have the local admin user removed.

I've tested the app on a machine which has had the local admin user removed and it falls over when trying access the AX control. Basically it cannot access the registry.

Before anyone answers this post please understand the following:-

The app is installed using an MSI in their group policy, so manual install is not possible. Also we are talking about 70 users, so asking them to perform a "RunAS.." is also not possible.

The solution has to involve no change in the way it's installed and not asking the user to perform any other action than double clicking the app icon.

Any ideas ?

ActiveX components should be fine running without Admin rights. What does the component do in the Registry? You should be able to load entries agains the CURRENT_USER but denied access to LOCAL_MACHINE.

I used to store some system settings in LOCAL_MACHINE until too many Microsoft security changes made me move them all to CURRENT_USER.

What happens when you add the user to the local power users group?
