Is .NET 3.0 specifically for use in Vista or can you create apps for XP with it too?

.net 3.0 is a sperate download from MS. it's optional for XP and required for Vista.

.net 3.0 is backwards compatible with .net 2.0.

I was under the impression that .net 3.0 extended the libraries of 2.0 and that if you strayed into any of this new territory your application would no longer work with 2.0. Is that the case, or have I just misread something somewhere?

2.0 to 3.0 doesn't cause breaking changes like 1.x to 2.0.
if you use the new features of 3.0 then 3.0 is required. if a client machine has 3.0 installed and your app is written in 2.0 then the program will run on the 3.0 machine without crashing.
